Mathematical models with a wide range of scales poses severe challenges for computations. The finest scales must be resolved over domains that include the largest scales. A direct numerical approach is typically prohibitingly expensive in computational resources. We will briefly discuss classical analytical methods and then focus on modern numerical techniques, which couple models of different scales. One example is the coupling of microscale atomistic models with continuum models as, for example, the equations of elasticity or the Navier-Stokes equations on the macroscale. Title The
