BIFURCATING FROM SYMMETRIC RELATIVE EQUILIBRIA: SURPRISES AND LIMITATIONS OF THE MINIMIZATION METHOD.

405 , Mathematics Research Center Building (ori. New Math. Bldg.)

Studying quasi-periodic solutions which bifurcate from a relative equilibrium motion of n equal masses forming a regular n-gon reveals that members of two quite different classes of solutions of the n-body problem -- choreographies and Hip-Hops -- may have a common origin. At the same time, exhibiting natural isomorphisms between different group actions, this study shows the limitations of the method of minimization under symmetry constraints. This is a joint work with Jacques Fejoz.
