Kahler Calabi-Yau threefolds can be deformed into a non-Kahler object by degeneration and resolution. We will discuss various aspects of the geometrization of this process by special non-Kahler metrics. This talk will survey joint works with T. Collins, B. Friedman, S. Gukov, C. Suan, and S.-T. Yau.
