Physics and mathematics of dispersive shocks: An introduction

In this lecture, we shall apply the Whitham modulation theory developed earlier for the KdV equation to description of dispersive shocks. Gurevich-Pitaevskii problem is formulated. Its solution is given for a dispersive shock formed due to decay of an initial step-like distribution.
