In 2013, there are so many big data related talks around the world. The presenters of these talks include mathematicians, statisticians, engineers, computer scientists, product managers and so on. However, there is still a lack of definition, from a theoretical viewpoint about what big data sets are really about. Is it just a jargon brought up with some commercial objectives? Is it a scientific problem? As a statistician, should I get involved? Is the “data scientist” a fantasy? I do not have answers for all these questions. However, I am sure that no matter how you look at this buzzword, this “Big Data” concept, and its related issues and those innovations built on its top will definitely change our lives or at least our life styles. So, in this talk, we will discuss with you how some very simple statistical ideas can be possibly used in analyzing big data sets. In addition, I would like to share with you how possibly to prepare yourself for this Big Data era, and how we can play an important role in it from my personal viewpoint.
