To understand the nature of the strong interaction in the subatomic regime is a grand challenge in science. Starting from the fundamental theory for the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), it is highly computationally demanding to extract physical observables, which always requires the state-of-the-art supercomputers. In this talk, I outline the salient features of QCD which are relevant to HPC, and explain how GPUs can be tuned to serve as a vital device for largescale QCD simulations.
