The best known integrable geometric elliptic PDEs are equations for harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces to symmetric spaces, for constant mean curvatures in space forms, and for definite affine spheres in affine 3-space. In this lecture, I will give an introduction on how to use techniques arising from soliton theory to study these equations and discuss some open problems.
