Strongly nonlinear internal model for a system of two fluid layers has been studied for dynamics of large amplitude internal long waves. It has been shown that the solitary wave solution of the strongly nonlinear internal model has excellent agreement with experimental observation. However, the model suffers from the shear instability due to the velocity jump across the interface. A regularized strongly nonlinear internal model has been proposed to overcome such weakness of the model. Some stability results and numerical simulations using an effective numerical method are discussed.
