In this talk, we study the new Poisson-Boltzmann (PB_n) equation governing the ionic transport in the ionic channels of the membrane. The PB_n equation has a small parameter 0<ε<<1 and the non-local nonlinearity which takes into consideration the preservation of the total amount of each individual ion. This equation can be derived from the original Poisson–Nernst–Planck (PNP) system. In applied mathematics, we will provide a viewpoint to see how ion concentrations affect the membrane potential. In pure mathematics, we will study the asymptotic behaviour of the radially symmetric solutions of the PB_n equation as ε approaches zero. Now this work is still ongoing.
