Solar forcing peaks at the equator while greenhouse forcing has a minimum at the equator. Yet the climate's response near the surface is very similar: there is a polar amplification of warming with the minimum in warming occurring at the equator. In this joint work with Ming Cai of Florida State University, I will discuss the robust responses to radiative forcing and explain why the response is so similar. The implication for using the 11-year solar cycle response to constrain the climate sensitivity for doubling CO2 is also discussed.
