Higher order variants of the harmonic map problem are difficult for various reasons, one of them being the lack of coercivity of the underlying functional in the natural Sobolev spaces. I will discuss some ideas that help to overcome these problems for second order funtionals. They depend on replacing the Sobolev spaces by intrinsically nonlinear spaces, which are adapted to the variational problem in question.
